Boldings report

SPORTS DESK 28/8/07

Telford based Andy Williams enjoyed three more frame appearances at Boldings Pools this week, with a shared win, an outright win and a second place, recording two ton weights along the way.

The first of his successes came on Wednesday when he repeated his mid week win of last week. This time he shared top billing with Tony Foster (OB Wolves). Both recorded 95-7-0. Andy was on peg 6 on the Deepdale Pool, and caught close in on corn and pellet, while Tony fished pellet up in the water at peg 3 on Hawthorn. Close behind the top two was Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) with a Middle Pool best of 95-0-0.

On Thursday Williams led the way on the Sycamore Pool, having changed tactics to a corn and maggot combination. The fish came from close in again, with Andy helping himself to carp to 10lbs on his way to 118-2-0.

John Newton (WB Clarke) made it two second spots in two weeks when he scaled 101-3-0. Like the winner he offered corn and maggot in the side, to net carp to 9lbs and bream to 4lbs at Sycamore 47.

Saturday saw tons all the way for the top four, with Simon Jukes (OB Wolves) heading the list from peg 50 on the Sycamore. Maggot and pellet was his choice of baits, and he picked up carp to 8lbs on his way to 133-5-0.

Andy Williams had 118lbs again, beating his Thursday weight by just one ounce by scaling 118-3-0 at Sycamore 37 to take second. Third placed Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) was on the peg which Williams won from on Thursday, number 22, and finished only 6lbs behind on 112-3-0 for third. That left Richard Lawson (WB Clarke) on 100-6-0 at point peg 13, to complete the ton up line up.

Catch rates eased on Sunday, with the top four all dropping into the 70lb region, and only 3lbs separating each of the placings.

A carp of 12lbs helped Phil Rhodes (Middy ML) snatch the top place in a tight frame by pushing his total to 79-12-0 at peg 2 on the Sycamore. Phil caught on pellet, with some of the catch coming from the margins and some from the 3 metre line.

Fellow Middy rod Steve Owen worked close in and at 5 metres with corn and pellet to finish 3lbs adrift on 76-8-0 at peg 24. Another 3lbs behind came Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) on 73-9-0 at peg 18 and John Francis (Rod & Gun) followed him on 70-0-0 at peg 33.

Both of the week-end matches at Boldings Pools were won with ‘ton’ weights, with a difference of only two ounces between the big catches.

Top man on Saturday was Dave Brown (Maver) who won from peg 5 on the Willows Pool, where a shallow fished maggot attack on the 12 metre line resulted in carp from 1lb to 7lbs adding up to 103-1-0. fellow Maver rod Martin Harrell alternated maggot at 12 metres with corn close in at peg 9 on the Ash Pool, and found carp to 8lbs for 94-14-0.

A Larch best of 80-15-0 gave Dave Craggs (OB Wolves) third at peg 16, and at peg 22 on the same pool Roy Richardson (West End) recorded 68-5-0 to take fourth.

The next day Steve Dudley, another Maver rod topped Saturday’s winner by two ounces to win with 103-3-0. He was peg 11 on the Larch and tempted carp to 9lbs with corn and maggot, fished close in to the side.

The runner up weight was just up on Saturday’s level as well, with John Newton (WB Clarke) scaling 98-5-0 for the place. He was on Oak peg 11, and worked with maggot close and pellet at 4 metres for carp to 8lbs. Duncan Newton made it two of the family in the frame with a Sycamore best of 94-11-0 for third, and Phil Rhodes (Middy ML) finished off the week-end with 77-12-0 for fourth at Larch 19.

Having drawn corner peg 9 on the Deepdale Pool, Andy offered corn and maggot, close in , and his offerings were accepted by carp to 8lbs, which helped him to edge ahead of Carl Foster (OB Wolves). Andy ended the day on 92-13-0, while Carl, at peg 6 on the Hawthorn, finished with 83-6-0. His were a smaller stamp of fish, in the 1lb to 4lb bracket, which he found with pellet fished to the island, and paste at 4 metres.

Things were a little slower on Thursday, but it still took nearly 70lbs to win for Ed Turner (OB Wolves) who had Tony Foster (OB Wolves) hard on his heels throughout the match.

Ed was on peg 13 on the Chestnut and worked pellet into the corner and out at 4 metres to put together 69-11-0, a catch which included carp to 9lbs. Tony’s fish were generally just a bit smaller at peg 42 on the Sycamore, with fish to 8lbs on corn and pellet leaving him just under 3lbs short on 66-13-0.

Andy Williams made it two frames for the week with 57-6-0 for third at Sycamore 30, and Duncan Newton also made it two by scaling 55-13-0 at Sycamore 36.

SPORTS DESK 15

Mel Kitson (rod & Gun) opened the proceedings ay Boldings Pools with the top weight of the week on Wednesday, when he tipped a level hundredweight of fish onto the scales at peg 8 on the Middle Pool. The catch consisted of carp from 1lb to 8lbs, caught on corn and pellet, fished into the corner.

Some 40lbs behind Mel, and in the opposite corner of the Middle, was Harry Colley (OB Wolves) who offered meat and corn close in at peg 1 for 71-2-0 to take second place. Mick Jameson (Middy ML) was next to the winner and sneaked third with 63-15-0, just beating Graham Evason (OB Wolves) on 61-14-0 at Middle 3. Best on the Hawthorn was Mark Mountford (Shifnal) with 57-9-0 and Martin Travis (Shrewsbury) led the way on the Stock with 51-0-0.

Peg 39 on the Sycamore was the scene of victory for Matt Stobbs (Rod & Gun) on Thursday when a close in corn and maggot approach saw him slipping the net under carp to 9lbs to build a 96-6-0 winning total. Leon Duvalier (Bridgnorth) went out to 12 metres with shallow fished maggot to find carp to 8lbs at Sycamore 33, but never really threatened the winner, finishing on 72-7-0. Boldings report

SPORTS DESK 8/8/07

Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Angling Centre) has had a number of weights close to the 100lb mark from Boldings Pools, but has always fallen just short of the magic figure. Until this week that is. On Sunday he eased past the ‘ton’ at peg 13 on the Sycamore, by fishing close in with maggot for carp to 9lbs and bream to 3lbs, to finish the day in top spot on 118-0-0.

Richard Lawson (R & G) led the way on the Oak with 104-3-0, another maggot based catch, which came from peg 29. 88-11-0 from peg 27 on the Sycamore gave John Francis (R & G) third ahead of Nick Powell (Bridgnorth) on 85-9-0.

Two Shrewsbury rods battled for top honours on Saturday, with Kevin Melville (Phoenix) getting the advantage over Andy Williams (Dorset). Kevin fished corn and maggot at peg 28 on the Chestnut to take fish close in for 84-8-0. Andy was over on the Hawthorn, and he too worked corn and maggot, alternating close in and out to the paddles at peg 1. He fell 10lbs short of the winner though, to scale 74-8-0.

The Hawthorn gave the next two places, with tied weights from Kev Williams (OB Wolves) at peg 3 and Martin Harrell (Maver) on peg 11. They both scaled 68-3-0 to share third.
